Apple TV Q&A: Can It Be Hacked? Is Hulu Plus Coming?
After posting the first Apple TV review online yesterday, we are now moving on to general questions about the device you guys have written us with. Let the Q&A session begin!
Q: Can Apple TV be hacked?
A: Early reports seem to indicate: yes. A tool called SHAtter is reportedly the key to success, but keep the following things in mind, my adventurous friends:
-Apple has yet to release the iOS 4.2 update that allows streaming from OS devices like your iPhone 4 to your Apple TV. That comes out in November. When you download it, I'd assume it would undo all your hacking handiwork, despite boasts that the SHAtter tool allows for updates without losing your hacks.
-It seems possible to hack the system to stream apps and, perhaps, games, to your Apple TV, but there's no way to change the resolution of these mobile apps. In other words: they are going to look pixilated on your large television, if you manage to successfully get them there.
-Some hackers seem to be focusing on the micro-USB connection on the rear panel. Apple reps told me this was basically a connection for emergency use—say, if you desperately need to restore factory settings. But your Apple TV will regularly update via Wi-Fi, and it's possible to restore factory settings via Wi-Fi, as well. Regardless, the micro-USB appears to be active, so it will definitely receive attention from hackers.
Q: Can I adjust parental controls for Netflix content on Apple TV like I can for iTunes content?
A: Yes, and there are two ways to do this. Online, go to Netflix and sign in, go to "Your Account & Help", scroll down to "Preferences", click on "Change parental control settings" and block or allow movies based on their rating. This will affect both your DVD Queue and your Watch Instantly Queue—and whatever you change here will change on your Apple TV's Netflix menu, as well. Or, you can go to Apple TV's settings menu and, under Parental Controls, create a passcode for Netflix, as well as YouTube, Internet Radio, Internet Photos, and Podcasts. You can choose to hide these menu options from your kids, or require the passcode be entered in order to access them. So, this second method is more of a complete block of content of Netflix, and the first is more of a filter.
Q: I heard Apple TV streams full 1080p HD—is this true? And what about surround sound?
A: No. The highest resolution for video streaming with the new Apple TV is 720p, which looks great, but is not, obviously, as great as 1080p. That said, most movies and TV shows now also stream with full 5.1 Dolby surround sound when available, which is impressive. I checked to make sure I was getting full surround when watching a variety of shows yesterday, and, indeed, an episode of "Lie to Me" had unique audio content in each channel. In time, 1080p HD streaming should become available, but right now, I'm assuming Apple is more concerned about getting the content loaded and buffered quickly so you're not waiting forever. TV shows seemed to take less than 10 seconds to begin playing after rental yesterday, and movies less than, say, 45 seconds. Not bad.
Q: I have an older TV—will the Apple TV work with it?
A: Apple TV has only one video output—HDMI. If you don't have an HDMI input on your television, you will need to buy an HDMI-to-whatever-your-input-is converter, either for composite, component, or S-Video. Keep in mind, all video content on iTunes is now in widescreen, 16:9 format, so viewing it on a really old television is not going to be a very rewarding experience. As long as your TV is simply an older model lacking HDMI, but is widescreen, the content should retain aspect ratio, just not resolution.
Q: What operating system is Apple TV running?
A: Apple won't say. I have noticed that you can rearrange the order of your TV rentals by making an icon wiggle and sliding it to whatever position you please—similar to the process for arranging icons on iPod touches, iPads, and the iPhone. But Apple has gone out of its way to clarify that the Apple TV is not considered an iOS device. Sure, it can stream (or will be able to soon) from iOS devices, but it would seem that the OS is some sort of hybrid of iOS 4.1, and not iOS 4.1 itself. As of now, the OS has no name, and Apple doesn't seem interested in elaborating.
Q: Now that Roku and TiVo have Hulu Plus, will Apple follow suit and add it to the Internet menu on Apple TV?
A: One's gut reaction might be: why add competition for iTunes onto an Apple product? But Apple's inclusion of Netflix certainly did that. Yesterday, for instance, I recorded a video in which I rented Let The Right One In for $4.99—and one viewer hilariously pointed out I could have instead streamed it from Netflix, on Apple TV, for free. Woops. The point is, however, that Apple isn't opposed to providing portholes for potential competition, but my guess is their criteria for allowing this goes something like: "Is this competitor so established, much like iTunes, that we'd be better off recognizing our own customers use the service and making their lives easier?" In the case of Netflix, the clear answer was yes, and the occasional rental Apple loses in favor of a stream from Netflix on the same device will probably be negated by sales of Apple TV units because it has Netflix loaded.
In the case of Hulu Plus, I don't think we have a competitor that people are truly paying for and addicted to on a level that Apple will feel the need to add it. Furthermore, Apple desperately wants more networks to get on the 99-cent rental bandwagon (currently, only Fox, ABC/Disney, and BBC are available), and streams of potential rentals on the same box would seem to undermine this goal. So, my guess is: no.

World’s Fastest Supercomputer – IBM’s Mira
The race is back, and IBM is now beating the World’s fastest SuperComputer to grab the crown, which at the moment belongs to China’s Tianhe-1A .
United States is now owns the fastest SuperComputer, pushing China to the second place, of course leaving Google Plex aside. Very recently, China had pushed Cray XT5 Jaguar to the Rank 2. Although, you can Build yourself Supercomputers, it does cost millions when its built as a nation’s pride.
The Tianhe-1A, meaning Milky Way, was designed by the National University of Defense Technology (NUDT) in China. It is the work of 200 scientists, that makes groundbreaking performance record of 2.507 petaflops, or quatrillion calculations per second, making it the fastest system in the world today. Ordinarily the computer runs at 563.1 teraflops, or trillion calculations per second.
Lets welcome Blue Gene/Q, aka “Mira”, IBM’s latest and greatest supercomputer boasting a ten-petaflops of raw power. Mira is capable of running programs at ten quadrillion calculations a second.
To give you an idea of how powerful this supercomputer is IBM’s statement tries to explain it:
“If every man, woman and child in the United States performed one calculation each second, it would take them almost a year to do as many calculations as Mira will do in one second.”
Where would the Most Powerful SuperComputer be used?
Mira would be employed with US Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory, where it’ll be used to tackle 16 projects in particular that were drawn from a pool of proposals to gain access to her capabilities. We’re told that these include a range of initiatives — from reducing energy inefficiencies in transportation and developing advanced engine designs to spurring advances in energy technologies — and in time, it could lead to exascale-class computers “that will be faster than petascale-class computers by a factor of a thousand.”

Argonne National Laboratory will use IBM’s next-generation Blue Gene/Q supercomputer to stoke economic growth and improve U.S. competitiveness for such challenges as designing electric car batteries, understanding climate change and exploring the evolution of the universe. The 10 petaflop system, named “Mira”, will be twice as fast as today’s fastest supercomputer, providing a strong science and technology engine that will fuel national innovation. Argonne is one of the U.S. Department of Energy’s oldest and largest labs for science and engineering research, located some 20 minutes outside Chicago, IL (Feature Photo Service).
Mira will offer an opportunity for scientists to become more familiar with the capabilities an exascale machine will offer and the programming changes it will require. For example, scientists will have to scale their current computer codes to more than 750,000 individual computing cores, providing them preliminary experience on how scalability might be achieved on an exascale-class system with 100s of millions of cores.
Once Mira is online, the DOE’s Innovative and Novel Computational Impact on Theory and Experiment (INCITE) and the ASCR Leadership Computing Challenge (ALCC) programs will award blocks of computing time via a peer-reviewed, competitive process to researchers who are working on scientific challenges that are best addressed by the capabilities of high-performance supercomputers.

All that is missing from the kit is main memory – which runs around $25 a 2 gig stick and a hard drive and optical drive. Look for the newer versions of the board which fix a SATA bug. You also need a case and power supply.
And then there is the OS. If you want to get a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate, you are going to pay $199. This is more than a 2 terabyte hard disk; it's more than an optical drive. It's almost as much as a motherboard, sound subsystem, Ethernet connection, and brand new CPU all combined. Oh, then there's the labor that's involved. I may take an hour or more to put a machine together and maybe another hour to install the OS. What is your time worth, anyway?

Only 10% of Doctors Using Complete eHealth Records Systems, Surveys Find
Combined data from two surveys of U.S. physicians taken over the past two years shows that while there has been a marked increase in the number of doctors using electronic health records (EHRs), the overall number of fully-functional systems remains in the high single digits to low double digits.
Preliminary estimates from the 2010 National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NAMCS) , which is conducted by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC), showed that the percentage of physicians with EHRs that met the criteria of a basic EHR system by state ranged from 12.5% to 51.5%.
However, after excluding 27 states with unreliable estimates, the percentage of physicians having systems that met the criteria of a fully functional system across the United States ranged from 9.7% to 27.2%.
A comparison of 2009 and 2010 surveys showed the number of physicians with systems that met the criteria of a basic or a fully functional system increased by 14.2% and 46.4%, respectively.
The federal government has been using a carrot and stick-approach to prod physicians and hospitals into deploying EHRs that meet its "meaningful use" criteria.
Physicians may receive as much as $44,000 under Medicare and $63,750 under Medicaid, and hospitals may receive millions of dollars for implementation and meaningful use of certified EHRs under both Medicare and Medicaid.
Those that don't implement EHRs by 2015 will begin being penalized through cuts in Medicare payments. Phase I of its meaningful use criteria -- all 864 pages of it -- was released last year. Phases II and III are expected out by the end of this year and 2013, respectively.
Currently there are 23 measures proposed that hospitals must implement before the end of this year to gain the maximum amount of reimbursement under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
Dr. Tom Handler, a radiologist and analyst for the research firm Gartner, said one of the main barriers to adoption, "valid or not," are concerns about the productivity and usability of EHR systems. Many physicians also believe that the data collected by the government through EHR reporting criteria will be used to decrease Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements, Handler said.
"Ultimately, what I hear doctors saying is, 'Let me get this straight. You want me to spend money to put in a system that will be harder to use and slow me down, so I will earn less money, and that the end result is that someone else makes more money," Handler said. "If you phrase it that way, it's not illogical to see why they don't want to do it."
E-prescribing is another example. "Docs say, 'I didn't go to medical school to become a data entry clerk so Walgreens could hire one less pharmacy tech to enter the system.'"
Handler said current meaningful use criteria also doesn't take aim with incentives that address what physicians consider some of the most critical reforms needed in healthcare today.
For example, Handler said, a computer-based patient record system can catch duplicate patient test orders, but the current meaningful use incentives don't penalize physicians for ordering duplicate tests.
Ultimately, it's the patient -- the insurance company and then society -- that pays for the duplicate test, and yet, its the physician who'll have to foot the cost for the system that can prevent the duplicate tests, he said.
Dr. Harry Greenspun, chief medical information officer for Dell and a member of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMMSS), said resistance to EHR adoption can be as simple as a physician not wanting to add steps to a process that has worked for decades.
"It's really easy to write a prescription; you just jot it down on note paper. On a computer screen it can take a lot longer," he said. "If you go have to through a check list or a menu-driven program, it can be clunky, and a barrier to adoption."
"On the other hand," he continued, "If I can share [radiological] images, pull data from other systems, write a prescription all from one screen ... and get valid prescription alerts and find out about public health threats, then the value is obvious."
The CDC said there has been an increasing trend in EHR use among office-based physicians from 2001 - when the first survey was conducted -- through the preliminary 2010 survey estimates.
Combined data from the surveys taken in 2009, for example (both mail survey and in-person surveys), showed that 48.3% of physicians reported using all or partial EHR systems in their office-based practices.
About 21.8% of physicians reported having systems that met the criteria of a basic system, and about 6.9% reported having systems that met the criteria of a fully functional system, a subset of a basic system.
The CDC's National Centre for Health Statistics (HCHS) received survey responses from 70% of 3,200 physicians surveyed in person and 2,000 surveyed through a mailing. In 2010, NCHS surveyed a sample of 10,301 physicians with the mail survey and followed up with telephone calls to non-respondents. In all, about 66% responded, it said.
Dr. John Halamka, CIO of CareGroup and the associate dean of Harvard Medical School, said that although the numbers are currently low, more has been done toward implementing EHRs this past year than in the last 20.
"I'm not sure [physicians] don't want to implement EHRs. Implementing technology is rarely about bits, bytes, software and hardware. It's 80% change management," Halamka said. "If you walk into paper-based practices and say I want to digitize records, it would accomplish nothing. It's about how the office should perform its work differently."
Beth Israel Hospital, part of CareGroup, was able to convert 80% of its 1,700 physicians over to a standardized EHR system that resides in a private, cloud -based data center . "I said 80% of the cost will be covered by me and you no longer have to do [data] backups," Halamka said. "Their costs were reduced, expertise was brought in to help them and their infrastructure resided in the cloud."
Halamka said he believes this year will be a tipping point for EHR adoption, due to the fact that "meaningful use" standards are now published, vendors are getting their products certified and physicians and hospitals taking advantage of government-sponsored regional extension centers to help them deploy EHR technology.
"Just look at Massachusetts. We're already at more than 50% adoption," he said.

How to Run Mac OS X in Virtual Box on Windows
first install Virtualbox. Open up Virtualbox and click on New at the top left.
At the Create New Virtual Machine window, click Next.

After it boots you will see the setup screens for OS X! You're good to go. The only hiccup I've found is that it can only be virtualized with one core. It could be the OSX disc I was using or it might not be. And I have yet to find the right kext that will allow audio to work and the resolution is limited also. Update: I'd like to post some answers to the resolution and audio. I should have looked around before posting this but I just didn't have the time. So anyways heres what you can do:
To fix the resolution issue, open Finder and go to the OS X drive on the left. Open the folder called Extras. Right Click on the file com.Apple.Boot.plist and open it with TextEdit. Under the first insert this:

or another compatible resolution. Select "Save As" at the top and save it to the desktop, unchecking the check under Unicode and then save it as com.apple.boot.plist. After that drag and drop it into the extras folder and overwrite the original file, entering your password when prompted.

Don't install system updates. If you want updates you'll have to install another iso distribution with the updates on it. If you install the updates directly from apple it messes with the custom kexts and chameleon. Just a forewarning.
And for those of you getting boot issues try choosing a different version of Chameleon or a different kernel. Sometimes that seems to help. And If your getting one of the USB errors then try disabling USB in the VirtualBox settings and see if that helps.

If you can spare it, crank it up as far as you can go, but 1024MB should be sufficient.

This is where you'll make your hard disk. 20GB should be enough so what it comes down to is dynamic or static. Dynamic will expand on use and Static will be a fixed 20GB no matter how much data is actually in it. Dynamic is better for not taking up your hard drive but static should give you better performance. I normally use dynamic. Click next unless you want to change it from dynamic or if you want to increase the disk size or file location.

It will show a summary of your settings. Click Finish, then click Settings at the top. At this window click on System in the left pane and uncheck Enable EFI.

Now click on the Storage button on the left. From there click on Empty under the OSX.vdi, then click the folder with the green arrow on the right (next to "CD/DVD Device").

At this window click the Add button at the top. Then find and add the OSX86 ISO you downloaded earlier. Then highlight it and click Select at the bottom. Then click OK, and hit the Start button on the left side of the main VirtualBox window.

As it starts up, click inside the window and hit F8. Then at the boot: prompt type –v so you can see what exactly went wrong if something does go wrong. All the services will run and eventually you should come to the language screen. Choose your language then click next. If you are unable to move your mouse around then hit Right-Ctrl + I. Click Continue and Agree. Next, start up Disk Utility by going to Utilities in the menu bar.

At this screen highlight 20GB VBOX HARDDISK. Then click the Erase tab, name it what you want in the name box and click the Erase button on the bottom right of the window. It shouldn't take long. Then click Disk Utility in your menu bar and quit it. Now you're back at the installer. Highlight the drive that is now showing up and click Continue.

The next window is important. Click the Customize button on the bottom left.
AMD Users check:
Any Updates included at the top.
Drop down Kernels and choose Legacy kernel.
AMD option below System support.
Intel Users check:
Any Updates included at the top.
Drop down bootloaders and check the newest Chameleon.
Drop down Kernels and choose Legacy kernel.
Then click Done and hit the Install button. To speed up the process you can click Skip when the disc check pops up.

As soon as it says "installation finished" and starts counting down to restart, press the right Ctrl key. Click on Devices at the top of the VirtualBox window, hit CD/DVD Devices and click Unmount CD/DVD Device. Then go to Machine > Reset and click Reset at the prompt. Next you'll see the Chameleon loader and then OS X will begin to boot.

After it boots you will see the setup screens for OS X! You're good to go. The only hiccup I've found is that it can only be virtualized with one core. It could be the OSX disc I was using or it might not be. And I have yet to find the right kext that will allow audio to work and the resolution is limited also. But other than that you'll have a fully functioning OSX virtualized!
Update: I'd like to post some answers to the resolution and audio. I should have looked around before posting this but I just didn't have the time. So anyways heres what you can do:
To fix the resolution issue, open Finder and go to the OS X drive on the left. Open the folder called Extras. Right Click on the file com.Apple.Boot.plist and open it with TextEdit. Under the first insert this:
Graphics Mode
1280x1024x32
or another compatible resolution. Select "Save As" at the top and save it to the desktop, unchecking the check under Unicode and then save it as com.apple.boot.plist. After that drag and drop it into the extras folder and overwrite the original file, entering your password when prompted.

Don't install system updates. If you want updates you'll have to install another iso distribution with the updates on it. If you install the updates directly from apple it messes with the custom kexts and chameleon. Just a forewarning.
