Google Wallet: Five things you need to know
Fifth: You most likely won't be able to get access to Google Wallet right away. That's because Google is putting its system through a trial first on the Google Nexus S 4G, its own smartphone currently available only on the Sprint network. Lithium Battery Industry Has Great Future
Lithium batteries are dominating the battery industry. If you have a cell phone, a laptop, an iPad or an electric car, you are using lithium batteries to power them. According to Seth Fletcher, senior editor at Popular Science, Lithium could replace a lot of the oil we use in the future. Fletcher explores this idea in his book, Bottled Lightning: Superbatteries, Electric Cars and The New Lithium Economy. In an interview with NPR, Fletcher explained his theories on lithium logistics.
"You have to store metallic lithium in oil, otherwise it tarnishes," Fletcher explains to NPR's Steve Inskeep. "Actually, it's so volatile it doesn't exist in nature in its pure form. So if you're mining for lithium, you never find big arm-sized veins of lithium metal because they just don't exist." Most of the world's lithium, Fletcher says, comes from a series of salt lakes in a high-altitude region where Bolivia, Chile and Argentina meet. It's called the "lithium triangle." "Over the years, the water has absorbed minerals and settled in these giant salt sponges and now there's this rich brine," he says. When the water evaporates, it leaves behind an olive oil-like substance that has a small percentage of lithium, which is then processed into lithium carbonate, a white powder. And according to Fletcher, there's more than enough to meet the rising demand. "I don't know of any serious person in the automotive industry or in the lithium industry who believed that there is a serious, long-term supply problem," he says. "In fact, for the next 10 years there will probably be an oversupply of lithium because so many companies have now moved into the market." And unlike the impact of mining other natural resources, concentrating lithium is and "environmentally benign" process, Fletcher says. "It's about as low impact as mining can get. They're really just pumping water up ... And there are really no toxic chemicals in a lithium-ion battery."
Let us be clear about which lithium batteries we are discussing. There is a definite difference between lithium batteries and lithium ion batteries. According to a posted FAQ by greenbatteries.com, "There are several important differences. The practical difference between Lithium batteries and Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries is that most Lithium batteries are not rechargeable but Li-ion batteries are rechargeable. From a chemical standpoint Lithium batteries use lithium in its pure metallic form. Li-ion batteries use lithium compounds which are much more stable than the elemental lithium used in lithium batteries. A lithium battery should never be recharged while lithium-ion batteries are designed to be recharged hundreds of times." I am sure Fletcher is discussing lithium ion batteries in his book, not lithium batteries.
Is Fletcher correct when he says there are really no toxic chemicals in a lithium-ion battery? According to greenanswers, "Lithium ion batteries are generally greener over their counterparts, nickel-cadmium, because they have less toxic metals." Interestingly enough, no one except Mr. Fletcher is saying lithium-ion batteries are not toxic, just not AS toxic.
What is the future of the lithium ion battery? According to Mr. Fletcher's book, "Using lithium batteries can also boost the efficiency of how we store energy - say, from a wind farm or a bank of solar cells", Fletcher says. "What a lot of companies are working on right now is building gigantic banks of lithium-ion batteries that can store energy from power plants," he says. "Right now we don't store energy effectively at all. That's a big gaping hole in the grid right now." A limiting factor to the batteries, however, is the amount they can store and how quickly they can be recharged. While companies work to produce better lithium batteries, Fletcher argues, people should take advantage of the current uses. "Batteries are going to get better, but we don't have a battery that can power a car for 500 miles and then recharge in 15 minutes," he says. "It's going to be a long time before we have that battery, but the batteries we do have right now can do a lot of incredibly useful things, and they can do them very efficiently and affordably. I think we would be wise to use them to do those things while we're simultaneously developing future chemistries that maybe could power a car 500 miles and recharge in 15 minutes."
I would like to see more electric cars on the road. If they can make the batteries for these cars more efficient, with a longer running time and faster charging, we could see a lot less air pollution and less dependency on oil. Since I am now paying $4.25 for regular gas for my car, electric cars seem like an answer from heaven. What do you think? Google launches Chrome OS, says Windows is 'torturing users' Part II
Google made quick mention of a partnership with VMware and Citrix to deliver browser-based access to business applications, but said no more details would be revealed until later in the day during a panel discussion on enterprise computing. A built-in media player will play movies and music.
Google will also provide desktop versions in a small box that connects to a monitor, keyboard and mouse, but no availability date was given.
Users will be encouraged to back up data and settings to cloud-based services -- whether they be Google services or those from the likes of Box.net -- to ensure that applications and data are available from any device and allow users to upgrade computers without a cumbersome installation process.
"We really want to make it possible for users to store their important data in the cloud and access it anytime, anywhere," said Sundar Pichai, vice president of Chrome at Google.
The success of online services shows that many users do trust their data to the cloud. Whether enough will do so to replace 75% of Windows computers is a point that will probably be debated for quite some time.
But there are clear benefits. Google says the computers start up in seconds, resume from sleep mode almost instantly and have battery life of either 6.5 hours or eight hours. On a first use, it only takes a few minutes to set the computer up.
"Each time you open the lid, before you can move your fingers and touch the keyboard, you're connected to the Web," Pichai said.

Intel's Sandy Bridge issue could affect Apple the most
A design flaw within the chipset supporting its new line of Sandy Bridge processors may delay the launch of next-generation computers, and Apple could find itself affected the most.
Intel's latest chip is the first from the company to include integrated graphics silicon on the chip, while also using the company's advanced 32-nanometer manufacturing. This is said to allow PC manufacturers to offer systems that have much better graphics capabilities and much greater power efficiency than its predecessors.
It is expected that the problem will cost Intel at least $300 million, although another $700 million has been set aside for any necessary repairs and replacement costs. One positive is that the issue was caught early in Sandy Bridge's release, meaning that only a fraction of the estimated eight million "Cougar Point" (the code name) chipsets in manufacturers hands have actually made it to consumers.
Sandy Bridge will officially launch on February 20. Intel could not say as of Tuesday whether the flaw would delay this launch, although corrected chips that have only just started to be produced would not be ready before the end of the month. It would likely not be until April before the chipmaker ramps up to the volume demands of its customers.
Cougar Point chipsets allow for the connection of up to six Serial ATA devices, such as DVD drives, HDDs, and the like. Under extreme conditions, Intel found that devices on ports 0 and 1 would degrade in performance. No degradation was experienced on ports 2 through 5.
A possible workaround would be to ship devices based on the faulty chipset using only the unaffected ports, however that would obviously defeat the purpose of the new chipsets.
Based on the history of Intel and Apple's partnership, it's likely that Sandy Bridge would make it into the next-generation iMac and MacBook Pro computers. With the delays due to the issue likely in the range of up to three months, the new time frame for shipment would fall near to the time where Apple is expected to update its notebook line.
If there are no plans to update the line before April or so, the delay may not be noticeable to the consumer. However no manufacturer would be able to ship computers based on the Sandy Bridge architecture before the end of this month, and likely in limited quantities if so.

If there are no plans to update the line before April or so, the delay may not be noticeable to the consumer. However no manufacturer would be able to ship computers based on the Sandy Bridge architecture before the end of this month, and likely in limited quantities if so.
Intel would not comment on Apple's plans, and as with most issues the Cupertino company was not responding to requests for comment as it deals with speculation on future products.

Former MySQL boss: Code 'in better shape than ever' under Oracle
Despite concerns that Oracle would be unfriendly to open source projects acquired through the merger with Sun, former MySQL CEO Marten Mickos says the MySQL code base is in fantastic condition.
In an interview this week, Mickos said Oracle may not understand or care much about open source and the task of fostering community involvement, but Oracle seems committed to the products themselves and he has no complaints about Oracle's technical expertise. Version 5.5 of the MySQL database "probably is the best MySQL version ever produced," and the upcoming version 5.6 is looking strong as well, Mickos said.

"It's brilliant engineering and they are under the GPL license, completely open source, fantastically built, a low number of bugs, well tested and QA'd. All of that is fantastic," Mickos said. "But where you see it already changing is that in community engagement, discussion forums, bug databases, online documentation, you see how they are moving MySQL into the same mode as other Oracle products. Many in the community will react against it and feel that it's not as open and open source as it used to be and that's true. That's why you see new companies springing up and catering to that need. But the core product, the actual code, is in better shape than ever. And I think they will keep it that way."
Sun acquired MySQL in 2008, with Mickos staying on as a vice president until the next year. Mickos said he loved working for Sun but "didn't think Sun could survive on its own." Shortly after he announced his departure, the Oracle merger was revealed, with Sun ceasing to exist as a standalone company in early 2010. Mickos is now the CEO of cloud vendor Eucalyptus and is in the Boston area this week for the Red Hat Summit.
Oracle, Mickos said, has continued development of MySQL under the same vision set forth before the mergers. MySQL's traditional limitation was that it couldn't scale up, preventing the database from exploiting Sun's big servers. But MySQL could scale out, and that is becoming a very important attribute in the new world of cloud computing, he said.
When asked if Oracle is doing a better job with MySQL than he did, Mickos said, "I would tend to think I was a wonderful CEO and I did everything absolutely right. And we did it very well. The plans we had, they [Oracle] continued to execute on it. The long-term version, they are continuing to execute on it. They are reaching new heights with the technology, exactly as we would have done on our own. But they are really doing it. Many times when technology is acquired by somebody they sort of stop developing it or development slows down. But it hasn't -- they are moving along on the same ambitious plan we had three years ago, four years ago."
Mickos is moving along too, with Eucalyptus Systems, maker of an open source cloud-building platform. "We are trying to build one of the most significant software companies of this era," he said.
