Upcoming Gadgets Worth Waiting For

None of these highly awaited products has a firm release date, but they have us excited for their arrival.

July 30, 2011—When it comes to new technology, the old adage is true: Waiting is the hardest part.

Technology manufacturers have a habit of getting us psyched about forthcoming products, but leaving us hanging when it comes to actual release specifics. Though frustrating, it’s a smart marketing tactic, really. Get people talking about your gadget, building up so much anticipation that we can barely wait to get a hold of the thing. The annual Consumer Electronics show is a perfect example. We see tons of cool tech every January, companies let us put our hands all over it, but what we never see are dates. For every gadget at the show, there’s a nebulous future release timeframe, and we often don’t see it in the lab for testing until many months later—and sometimes not at all. In the interim, we wait.

This approach can also backfire. Sometimes the hype gets so huge that there’s no possible way a single phone, tablet, camera, or other device could ever live up to expectations. Remember the iPad 2 release back in March? Since Apple offered no advance information about the tablet, the maniacal rumor mill assigned all sorts of possible new features that never came to be. And when we wound up with only modest improvements over the original iPad, many people were disappointed.

Either way, this results in consumers scratching their heads, wondering if they should stick it out with their old gear, or pull the trigger on a new gadget. The eight products in the slideshow are the ones we think are worth waiting for.

5 reasons to embrace Microsoft Office 365 (or at least some of it)

Last week, I offered you 5 reasons why you should avoid Office 365 -- the new cloud service from Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT). This week, I want to offer the flipside of the coin. Let's see the glass half-full in The Long View...

Office 365 is a replacement for (and superset of) Microsoft's Business Productivity Online Suite (BPOS), its previous cloud collaboration offering. The two key components of BPOS are cloud-hosted versions of Exchange Server 2007 and Sharepoint Server 2007.

Office 365 updates the software to the latest versions, and adds additional functionality. Much of my criticism last week was aimed at how the new functionality presents itself. However, we shouldn't lose sight of the fact that the parts of Office 365 that are inherited from BPOS have some killer advantages over the competition.

So here are my favorite five: AD federation, the ability to do hybrid hosting, no need for retraining, the service's low price, and its high reliability. Some of these may seem like a surprise, compared with what I said last week, so read on for more...

The fall and rise of Microsoft Silverlight

InfoWorld - Microsoft Silverlight has had a topsy-turvy year. Apparently doomed or at least marginalized by HTML5, Silverlight found a foothold in Windows Phone and has more recently emerged as a key component of the Jupiter application framework and programming model for Windows 8. If Silverlight has become less important as a rich Internet application (RIA) framework, it has become more important to Microsoft's desktop and mobile platforms overall.

First off, it was good to see that Silverlight 5 can reference earlier version assemblies, as well as upgrade old projects with ease. Debugging is now extended to XAML through breakpoints and runtime value inspection. Gone is the tedium of having to sift through error messages or wire custom converters to trace binding errors. You can now use the Locals window for easy drill-down into errors and even be warned of potential pitfalls of improper placement within the debugger.

The Silverlight 5 beta lifts XAML with new debugging capabilities. Now, you can spot data binding errors easily without sifting through generic output messages.

Data binding has also been enhanced with several features found in WPF. I was able to bind to ancestors in the visual tree (similar to WPF's FindAncestor), which takes a lot of the heavy lifting out of DataTemplate design. You can now trace and bind the data context of a parent element without duplicating properties across multiple child views, streamlining both process and code.

I liked the new access for augmenting styles via bindings. The evaluated settings offer more flexible tuning of interface control display properties at runtime. New markup extensions let you run custom code within bindings. This makes it easier to configure properties or change the default language, for example, without messing around with resource wrappers.

Silverlight 5: Presentation, sound, and video Microsoft has also included implicit data templates that provide more flexibility in the presentation of disparate data sets. Dynamic data templates are a welcome alternative to cranking out custom converters, and they go a long way toward simplifying your code.

On the interface front, Silverlight 5 makes good strides at improving text handling. In addition to enriched kerning and leading for tighter text control, Silverlight's new multicolumn text flow controls do a nice job at building snazzier page layouts. With vector-based printing and OpenType support in the offing, better report and doc creation apps can't be far behind.

New text flow capabilities in Silverlight 5 help streamline multiple-column layouts.

The Silverlight 5 beta also shows off a number of performance tweaks and multimedia enhancements that will be important for game developers. XNA sound effect classes can be used to create independent sound instances -- improving audio precision for effect timing and looping, for example. Further, independent animation classes have been ported from Windows Phone 7 -- along with immediate graphics mode from WPF -- to speed up graphics rendering.

Another good addition is support for H.264-encoded media playback, which now pushes processing overhead to GPU-accelerated hardware. Improved performance will be key to this important niche for Silverlight going forward.

Reality check: Southern scales back desktop virtualization

Southern's high hopes for virtual desktops turn into a learning experience with soft returns.

Computerworld - Southern Co. had big ambitions for virtualizing its desktops. The company's IT leaders say they saw virtualization as an easier, cheaper setup than conventional PC environments.

In fact, as they started a virtualization pilot in early 2010, they figured they could do a widespread deployment without much difficulty and move most of the company's employees into a virtual desktop environment over two to three years.

Then reality hit.
At a Glance

Company: Atlanta-based Southern Co. is one of the largest producers of electricity in the U.S., serving customers in Alabama, Florida, Georgia and Mississippi.

Team leader: David L. Coker, vice president of computing and network services, proposed the Virtual Desktop Implementation Project as a way to cut costs while maintaining reliable IT services.

IT department: The total size of the IT group is 1,007, supporting nearly 25,500 employees.

Return on investment: According to IT leaders, the desktop virtualization ROI comes from more efficient management and increased flexibility.

"When we originally went into the pilot, we thought it would be a revolution -- that we'd put these machines out across the organization and we'd save a lot of money," says Steve Weber, Southern's director of client services. "What I learned going through this is that it wasn't ready for the revolution, but it had evolution aspects."

The company's experience illustrates the complexities of desktop virtualization. On the one hand, IT leaders recognize that the architecture promises to deliver some powerful benefits and financial returns. On the other, they're learning that those returns don't come easily.

"I think it's a much better architecture. It's more stable. It's more secure. It's easier to manage. And I think it will become the preferred architecture," Weber says. "But the question is, how do you get there?"

Southern is working on the answer.

The Atlanta-based energy company first considered desktop virtualization in 2004, when it started to virtualize its data center. Client services manager Mark Canup says the company pushed for data center virtualization for the typical reasons: reduced costs, increased flexibility, and lower energy use.

Back then, Southern's IT executives believed that desktop virtualization could deliver similar benefits, Canup says. But while server virtualization in the data center moved ahead, initial attempts at desktop virtualization yielded few returns. That's because desktop virtualization five or so years ago essentially meant moving applications off a desktop and putting them on a server.

"You had a PC behind the data center for every thin client you had in the field when it first started out, and you couldn't get enough virtual desktops on one server to make sense," Weber says.

That had changed by late 2009, when Southern decided to launch a pilot desktop virtualization project.

Cisco should cut 5,000 jobs, analyst says

The 7% reduction would help Cisco remain competitive

Networking giant Cisco needs to cut 5,000 jobs, nearly 7% of its total workforce, in August to remain competitive, one Wall Street analyst recommended Monday.

"While this is a difficult decision to make, in our view, it is required in order to maintain the 'competitiveness' of Cisco going forward," analyst Brian Marshall of Gleacher & Co., wrote in a note to investors.

The cut of 5,000 jobs would be 6.8% of the 73,400 employees Cisco had in April, he noted, but below the job cuts Cisco made in in 2001-2002 when it when from 44,000 to 36,000.

Marshall's recommended cuts come one day before Cisco CEO John Chambers is set to make a keynote address at Cisco Live! in Las Vegas where thousands of Cisco's customers and Cisco certified engineers are attending.

Chambers has already said the company will lay off employees amid a major restructuring. In May, Cisco reported an 11% decline in third-quarter profit and said it had extended itself into too many businesses. At that time, Cisco estimated that revenues for the current quarter, which ends July 31, would be flat or up by less than 2%.

Job cuts have already started with an early retirement program, and the workforce reduction Cisco expects to make will be global, affecting both full-time and contract workers, according to Gary Moore, who was appointed chief operating officer in May. He is cutting $1 billion out of Cisco's annual operating expenses over the next year.

In May, Cisco said it would tell employees of cuts in August or September. Cisco officials did not react immediately Monday to Marshall's recommendation to cut 5,000 jobs.

Marshall tabulated that cutting 5,000 jobs would reduce Cisco expenses by about $1 billion annually.

Marshall also urged Cisco to formally lower its long-term financial targets, cutting annual revenue targets by about 10%, down from a range of 12% to 17% with operating margins dropped to about 25%, down from a range of 28% to 31%.

Marshall also warned that while Cisco is considered the 800-pound gorilla in networking, it is still vulnerable to the competitive threat of smaller players who can "chip away at Cisco's dominance." He noted that Cisco cannot acquire all of its smaller competitors, even though it has purchased more than 50 of them since 2005. Those that remain independent and a potential threat as a group include Juniper Networks, Brocade Communications Systems and Fortinet.

Android fans flocking to iPad for tablet fix

iPad to have majority of tablet market share through at least 2012, Canaccord Genuity projects

As if more evidence of the iPad's dominance of the tablet market were needed, market research firm Canaccord Genuity now claims that the iPad is the tablet of choice among Android fans.

In a research note released late last week, Canaccord Genuity analyst Mike Walkley said that strong user preference for the iPad over other tablets would give Apple a majority market share in the tablet market through at least 2012.

"Our smartphone and handset checks indicate iPads are selling better to Android smartphone users than the current Android tablets," he said. "As a result, we argue that consumers purchasing a tablet are more likely to remain in that ecosystem given higher price points for tablet applications."

ANALYSIS: iPad rivals not up to snuff, says Consumer Reports
What's more, Walkley also said that Apple had positively nailed the pricing of its tablets compared to the competition, meaning that rival tablet makers would have to start aggressively slashing their prices in order to at all keep up with the iPad.

"Apple has priced the iPad 2 to the point where we believe it will be difficult for competitors to profitably compete, and ... both the Motorola XOOM and RIM Playbook have not sold well at current price points," he wrote. "We believe competing tablets must sell at a substantial discount to the iPad 2."

Canaccord Genuity projects that Apple will sell nearly 36 million iPads this year, nearly two-and-a-half times the 14.8 million iPads the company sold last year. Even though Apple has gotten a lot more competition in the tablet market this year, the projected 36 million iPad sales for this year still give the company a 56% share of the overall tablet market. Canaccord Genuity also projects that Apple will sell more than 55 million iPads in 2012, good for a 51% share of the tablet market. The firm says that Samsung will be the only other tablet vendor to claim even 10% of the market, as its projected 12 million tablets sold will give the company an 11% share of the market.

Canaccord's analysis is just the latest showing that Apple has so far remained the dominant player in the tablet market despite a flood of new entries. A survey of more than 3,000 consumers released by ChangeWave earlier this year found that 27% of consumers have plans to buy a tablet, and that 82% of them plan to purchase an Apple iPad. The Motorola Xoom, Research in Motion's BlackBerry PlayBook and the Samsung Galaxy Tab each accounted for less than 5% of planned tablet purchases. In an analysis of its survey data, ChangeWave said iPad competitors face a steep uphill climb against Apple, especially since the vendor has already released the second generation of its popular device while rivals are just getting around to releasing their first-generation tablets.

Additionally, IDC this year released a report showing the iPad accounted for 83% of all tablets shipped in 2010, while more research released by ChangeWave found that the iPad dominated corporate purchasing plans, as more than three-quarters of the businesses that planned on buying tablets reported plans to buy the iPad.

How to Avoid Complications Caused by Cell Phones

Many people are unaware that health complications, such as different illnesses and adverse physical conditions, can be caused by cell phones. Too much cell phone usage or improper cell phone usage can lead to many issues, including blurred vision and carpal tunnel syndrome. Recently, there have even been reports that too much cell phone usage may cause cancer of the brain.

At the end of May 2011, the World Health Organization (WHO) shared a report about the possible cancerous effects of using cell phones. The organization asserted that too much exposure to the radiofrequency electromagnetic fields emitted by cell phones can cause cancer cells to form in the brain. Though this report by the WHO is rather controversial and inconclusive, the information contained can be classified as a reminder to all of us that we should take precautions when using cell phones. Fortunately, there are several tips on avoiding health complications caused by cellular phones.

First of all, you should limit the amount of time you and especially your children use cell phones. It is believed that the electromagnetic fields emitted by cell phones can affect the growing organs of children. Too much cell phone usage can also be hazardous for pregnant women.

When you must use your phone, you should try to keep it at a distance from your body so that electromagnetic fields are unable to reach you. You can do this by using the speakerphone feature of your phone or by using specialized headsets. You can also put your phone in airplane or flight mode in order to stop your phone from emitting electromagnetic emissions.

Finally, make sure to choose the safest cell phone possible to reduce your risk for negative health complications. You will want to purchase a phone with the lowest specific absorption rate (SAR). SAR is a measure of the strength of the magnetic field absorbed by the body, and the lower a telephone's SAR, the better.

3D TV Tips - The Ins And Outs of 3D TV

Been put off from watching anything in 3D through the fear of looking unfashionable in those red and blue cardboard glasses? Well, 3D has moved on. Find out how now.

3D TV is the newest home viewing technology to hit the TV market. This technology, while exciting, can be a little bit tricky to understand. But to make the most of 3D, it does pay to understand it a little bit more.

To achieve your very own 3D viewing experience home, there are various ways you can employ and utilise several technologies now available on the TV market.

It is also worth reading about what 3D TV technology has to offer before investing in the product.

Take the standard flat screen TV, what you get is a flat 2D image. But we have two eyes which allow us to view in 3D in real life. But on screen, there is no depth to the image that is being displayed- it is simply a flat array of pixels and different colours which is basically like looking at a moving photograph. But it is of course possible for a TV to create the illusion of 3D. This is known as 'artificial 3D' as there isn't actually a 3D object protruding from the screen.

3D technology explained
When talking about 3D technologies, there are in fact several selections of categories in which you can divide the topic in to. There's anaglyph 3D technology, polarised 3D technology, which is commonly found in cinemas, active 3D technology, which is the one most commonly used for home 3D systems and finally there is parallax-barrier 3D technology. They are all essentially just different ways to feed different images to each eye.

Anaglyph 3D technology
The oldest form of 3D TV technology is the Anaglyph technology. This version of the 3D TV has been around for a very long time and is the one where the image is broken into two colours, red and blue, which gives us the 3D image. If you use this technology, you do not need a special 3D TV as it works even on standard colour TVs, as long as you have the right glasses with the red and blue filters.

Polarized 3D technology - passive 3D technology
You would only find this in cinemas where they show modern 3D films like Avatar. It works well and the required glasses are cheap and light. But Passive 3D is not mainstream technology, therefore cannot be used in the home on any current 3D televisions, but it is an option that could become more prevalent in the future.

Active 3D technology
Currently the leading 3D technology for the home 3D entertainment is Active 3D. Most of the major television manufacturers have active 3D TV models either released or will soon be launching models for sale in the TV market. The technology works well, but it requires each viewer to wear 'shutter glasses' which are heavier and more expensive that the polarised glasses required for passive 3D TV technology.

How this technology works is within the active 3D TV technology, the screen switches rapidly between showing the image intended for separate eyes. It switches between images at least 100 times per second, sometimes even more frequently on many 3D TVs.

Parallax barrier technology
The last of the 3D technology types is called Parallax barrier which is becoming fairly popular on personal devices like handheld gaming systems such as the Sony PSP. The beauty of it is that you don't need glasses, but have to be positioned exactly at the right spot to be able to see the 3D effect. This is because of the limitations of the technology and it's not yet fully developed for home use.

Conclusion
Having reviewed the various 3D technologies that are available on the market for consumers, this guide offers great tips and a thorough break down of the products for better understanding. This should help you decide on your specific needs and budget when your interest in 3D TV technology starts growing.

You will need to decide what precisely you need the printer for and what your financial budget is. Energy saving printers are also becoming quite popular as you will be surprised exactly how much energy even the smallest of printers consume.

In addition to being compact you will want it to be desirable to the eye. The office space at home may dominate the area and you will want to find options that allow you to make the space appealing. Often this is why people decide on a wireless all in one printer as they can be placed away from the other equipment and won't leave wires trailing all over the place. The ability to also be able to operate them directly from the unit is crucial.
